Products used to manage water ingress may include waterproofing membranes, waterstops, joint-sealing products, injection resins, repair mortars and drainage or protection components. The appropriate combination depends on the structure, water pressure, construction joints, cracks and whether the system can be applied from the positive or negative side.
Positive-side waterproofing is applied to the side of the structure exposed to incoming water, while negative-side waterproofing is applied internally where external access is limited. Positive-side treatment is generally considered during construction, whereas negative-side systems may be required for existing or inaccessible structures.
System selection depends on the structure, substrate, construction method, groundwater conditions, access and expected movement. Retaining walls, lift pits and permanent formwork can require different membrane, joint-detailing, drainage and protection components.
